Conscious of What Wakes Me Up at Night

I wrote the beginning of this post on Saturday night in my sleep. I don’t recommend it. You see, I have a lot going on at the moment. My brain is in overdrive at times.  And my body perceives my pace as a threat, however subtle. What if I am not ready for all that is coming? What if it’s not good enough? What if I forget to do things? What if…? What if…? What if…?

It’s actually perfect that I woke myself up worrying.  It gave me the entry into this blog post on “What is conscious leadership?” that had been eluding me.

Simply put: The practice of conscious leadership is about tuning in to the present moment over and over again to be responsive versus reactive.

My own coach, Annmarie Cheresco, says that “presence is being in constant creative response to whatever is occurring”.

Reality check? Gay Hendricks says that most of us are in presence for about four seconds at a time until something happens (e.g., a thought arises, a text dings, our child frowns) and we drift. Any of you who’ve tried to meditate may smile. One moment you are focused on your in-breath and feeling like you’re a star meditator.  And then about five minutes later you become aware that you’ve just redesigned the entire first floor of your home.

Unconscious leaders are rarely present to what is actually occurring. Instead, they are hijacked by their own thoughts, feelings and reactive personality habits.  They both create and get taken into the workplace dramas that unfold around them.

Leaders who practise conscious leadership become better able to slow down to the speed of presence over and over again. Conscious leaders ask themselves whether they are coming from threat or trust (above or below the line, for those of you in the know) and recognize that their current context—or come from place– will dictate all.

Saturday night I was waking myself up because I felt threatened, however subtly. I can accept myself for feeling fear right now because I am about to take several big professional steps in my business.

Not surprisingly, the same things that wake me up at night have me buzzing with excitement during the day.   My company and I are growing up!

For starters, welcome to our fully revamped website. It’s been a labour of love. It’s overdue. And now it’s here!

Next week we’ll open a real door to our new downtown Charlottetown space. We’re delighted to create a home where conscious leaders will come together for our Conscious Leader Forums, Experience Conscious Leadership and Private Label Leadership

Our new space is full of character and charm. It’s soon to be filled with courageous leaders willing to jump into playful and profound experiences that will help them wake up to strive less and achieve more for themselves, their organizations and our world.

I am so grateful for the support I feel all around me. As I write this post, the sun is shining, Weekend Morning is playing on CBC Radio and I am sitting on a comfy couch with hot coffee. In this now moment, there is nothing to fear and everything to delight in.

Taking life and leadership a moment at a time is available to all of us. I hope you’ll stick with us on this conscious leader journey. Some moments are really delicious.

Lisa – I love your new branding and the excitement is translating in this post. You’re bringing a fundamental facet of leadership to our region. We are all fortunate that we’ll benefit from your courage and your recognition of this “niche”. Here’s to you bringing this to mainstream leadership discussions every single day! Please tell me if I can help you in any way. I am sharing your new website with my network. (and since you mentioned CBC, why don’t you do an Island morning segment soon!)
